GLA Supplement

GLA is mainly found in Evening Primrose, Borage- and Black Current seed oil. Posts on these can be found in my right side-bar, under the RA-articles.

GLA
Gamma-Linolenic Acid

Origin:A type of omega-6 fatty acid found in evening primrose oil, black currant oil and borage oil.

Dosage:
Capsules or oil; 2 g to 3 g daily.

Claims:
Lessens joint pain, stiffness and swelling associated with RA. Eases symptoms of Raynaud's phenomenon and Sjögren's syndromes.

What we know:
Several studies show GLA is an effective treatment for reducing inflammation in RA with few side effects. GLA only works if taken orally; there is no evidence that these oils applied topically are effective. It also may regulate the immune system.

Studies:
One of the most promising studies was a placebo-controlled trial of 56 patients with active RA who received 2.8 g GLA for six months. Participants showed significant improvements related to joint pain, stiffness and grip strength. GLA doses at this level were found to be safe and effective for RA. A 2005 study showed that people with Sjögren's syndrome who took GLA and linoleic acid had significant improvement in eye discomfort and tear production.

I found many more therapeutic uses for this supplement. It is also supposed to help with Allergies, Anti-inflammatory, Antioxidant (indirect), Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Auto-immune Diseases, Bone and Joint Health, Brain Disorders, Breathing Disorders, Cellular Regeneration, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Cyclic Mastalgia/Mastitis, Dyslexia/dyspraxia/dyskinesia, Eczema, EFA Deficiency, Endometriosis, Eyesight Disorders, Fatigue, Fibrocystic Breast Disease, Fibroids, Fibromyalgia, Hemorrhoids, Hormone Imbalances, Joint Pain, Menopausal Problems, Muscle Cramps/Pain, Multiple Sclerosis, Nervous Disorders, Neuropathy, diabetic, Osteoporosis, PMS, Raynaud's Disease, Reproductive Organ Health, Retinal Disorders, Senility/Aging Problems, Skin Disorders, Ulcerative Colitis, Urinary System Stones and Weight Loss.

It is not recommended to take this, when you have a seizure disorder, because there have been reports of these supplements inducing seizures. Possible interaction could occur with the following medications or treatments: Ceftazidime, Chemotherapy for cancer, Cyclosporine, Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs), Phenothiazines for schizophrenia.

Talk to your health care provider first, if you are considering taking GLA supplements!

Evening Primrose was the first known plant of which the seeds were used for oil. Since it cured all kinds of conditions, it was also referred to in the middle ages as 'king's cure-all'.

Seems almost like a cure for everything, huh? Almost! No scientific prove has been found yet, although there are many studies going on.

Supplementing is only treating consequences. With proper diet and exercise, you may get all the vitamins and supplements you need. It may not be easy to commit yourself to diet and exercise, but it is foolish to shut your eyes and ears to the truth. It may and probably will come back to bite you.

As far as I am concerned, there is only one King, who cures all! :-)

John 18:37
Pilate therefore said to Him, "Are You a king then?" Jesus answered, "You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice."
