Supplements and Warnings

The other day, I read an article which was pretty disturbing and needs to be brought to your attention, especially when you take supplements and heart medication.

It so turns out, according to an article in the media that a recently held survey found that;

'People who take the blood-thinning medication warfarin are risking potentially dangerous complications by combining it with supplements such as fish oil, glucosamine and chondroitin, coenzyme Q10, St. John's wort, melatonin, and multivitamins.

Some supplements have the ability to either enhance or negate warfarin's effects, which could potentially trigger one of two dangerous complications: severe bleeding or a blood clot.
'

Even though most supplements and herbal remedies are natural and derived from plants, they can interact either positive or negative with any type of medication you are taking. In this case, supplements and warfarin should not be combined at all.

The danger would not exist if patients discussed with their doctor that they are considering taking a supplement. That doesn't seem to happen, because people don't see a supplement as medications, but they should.

I have mentioned it many times before and will do so again: if you want to take a supplement or try a herbal remedie, then talk to your physician first. Simply pick up the phone, call and ask, or consult a pharmacist.

Don't venture out on your own; you just got through reading that can be very dangerous. Let God guide and direct your steps, mind His word and follow His leadership. It will save your life! :-)

Ezekiel 33:5
He heard the sound of the trumpet, but did not take warning; his blood shall be upon himself. But he who takes warning will save his life.
