Those Few Extra Steps

If you are a frequent reader of my blog you already know that consuming dark chocolate (in moderation of course) is accredited with many health benefits.

A recent study has shown that it has another benefit. For those who suffer from PAD (Peripheral Artery Disease) there is good news: it enables you to walk a little farther and a little longer.

PAD is a rather common disease among the elderly and can cause painful legs and cramps during walking. People who have PAD are also at a higher risk of being afflicted by heart attacks and strokes.

It is suspected that the polyphenols in dark chocolate have the ability to increase blood flow to the legs. They expand the blood vessels and the effects are noticeable a few hours after eating dark chocolate.

There are a few negative aspects to it though. First of all, the increased time and distance you would be able to walk more are ever so slightly. Secondly, it adds more calories to your diet which you won't walk off.

The study is still in a very early stage and it seems like the disadvantages outweigh the benefits. It is advised to change your lifestyle and diet and resort to exercising to improve PAD.

That may not always be easy or feasible. Being able to go those few extra steps are sometimes just what is needed. Literally and figuratively speaking!

Matthew 5:41
And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two.
