Blood Drive

As far as my knowledge goes (which is not that far, haha) there are no blood drives in the Netherlands. You go to the Red Cross-building to donate blood. Every now and then you may get a pamphlet in the mail or see a commercial on t.v. to urge you to donate blood. I would like to share this story with you, that has become a family-anecdote :-)

Shortly after I came here, we were taking several drives as Kc showed me around. On one of those drives, we passed a church (I have come to find it unusual NOT to pass a church, for there are so many here), and on the church-sign it said: "Blood drive, Sunday (date) from 12-2 pm."

Blood drive??? Blood drive!!! Ewww, that doesn't sound good! My sometimes too vivid imagination was working overtime. I fell pretty silent after having read that sign and prolly turned a little pale.

Kc: "Is something wrong? You are so silent."

I managed to work up the courage to ask, a little nervously: "What is a blood drive?"

Kc: "Oh, that is a race. The goal is to destroy your opponent. There are a lots of crashes and accidents and injuries. That's why it's called a blood drive. It's very popular here."

Gulp!! I turned a wider shade of pale as I processed that information. That's horrible. Crazy Americans! How come I never heard of that bloodsport? Then, somewhat grateful we wouldn't get into that mess:"Am I glad today is not Sunday!!"

Kc laughed so hard and than filled me in by telling me what a blood drive really meant! Geezz... can you imagine my relief?!?! Shew.......! hehe.

I think it's a good thing, donating blood. It will/may save lives. We can share what we have with those who have not. Fill a need, not just in this, but in every way, out of love. Where would we be if God withheld from us what we needed? :-)

Isaiah 58:7
Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, And that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out; When you see the naked, that you cover him, And not hide yourself from your own flesh?

I can picture your horrified face as you thought of accidents, and blood all over the place... yikes. By now I'm sure you have gotten even by telling Kc a tale or two about your culture.

Claire,
Yeah, especially when you are being told in a very serious tone of voice and a poker-face, haha.
Kc still can fool me like that at times, but... I am learning (grin).

Karen,
You are more then welcome. We hope you had a great and blessed day.

I can see there are some glitches, your comment came through twice, hehe.

Kristi,
Arrghh, the fan-thing, haha. Well, that happened to me again! I wanted to make a copy and hit the on-button on the machine. It didn't come on so I thought I may not have pressed it hard enough. I press it again. Nothing! ??? Then it hit me: it would work better if it was hooked up, hahaha.
(hand in air, hitting imaginary fan....bbbrrrbbbrrbbbrr) grin.

LOL Corry...this post gave me a great laugh which I needed ;D ! I can just imagine what you must have thought...I think I would have sat there in horror as well.

You make such a good point though...He gives us the ability to be there for others and help give them something they might have. He doesn't withhold from us and if we are to live out His love, then we shouldn't withhold either...thanks for the reminder and the great scripture to claim with it!

P.S. Thanks for the picture...I got it in the mail yesterday...it's beautiful and an awesome reminder of a new friend when I look at it!

God bless you dear sister ;D !

HA! Sounds like the stuff my husband used to pull on the gullable kids at the Children's Home we used to work at. Finally they started asking in timid voices, "Really Mr. Dave?" He would just smirk and say, "Nope." Then the lot of them would scream, "MR. DAAAAAVVVVVEEEE!" Heh.

You are more then welcome. For the laugh, hehe, for the scripture, which I like very much as well and for the drawing. I am glad it arrived and I hope in one piece too. Thanks for letting me know:-)

Marianne,
Yep, sounds like Kc. Several times he would explaining something to Amber and/or me and at the end he would tell us he made it all up! HAH! And Amber would go, "DAAAADDDD!" and I would go. "KCCCCCCCC!"
And Kc just laughs:-) Isn't there some scripture about sowing and reaping???!!! grin.

God's Grace.

I get really light-headed and whacky after I give blood, and the nurse always struggles to find a vein and pops me a gazillion times. Not, always a pleasant experience for me.

A friend of my husband's called up one day and pretended to be soliciting funds for a certain politician's legal defense fund, knowing that I harbored un-Christian feelings against this politician. Luckily I figured out what was going on before I hung up on him =] Gave me a good laugh!

Ryan,
I can imagine it's not pleasant! That sounds horrible, yuck. My mom has got the same problem, they have a difficult time finding her vein. She always passes out after a lab-visit. I prolly would too if I would look at it, but I turn away, hehe. It's not so much the blood, it's the needle that freaks me out. I can't even watch it on tv, haha. Whimpy, huh:-)

Lenise,
That's funny, haha. Just imagine you hadn't found out! I wonder how often he would have kept calling you back, hehe.

A friend of ours was aggitated with his neighbor's behavior. So Kc calls him up one day, to catch up, but starts out pretending to be from the FBI, asking him all kinds of question about the matter. Poor guy got real timid and nervous and more and more silent as the "interrogation" progressed. When Kc let him off the hook, I could almost hear the sigh of relief across the room, haha.

Kitty,
So good to see you're back, girl!

Yeah, it sounds horrible, doesn't it? I guess you would have made a good candidate for this prank too, haha.

Pia,
You are in for a treat than, when we meet, hehehe.

Audrey,
You are more then welcome. I love those cards, they are always so funny.

I am glad you found out you had to click the buttons. Made more sense "reading" the card, didn't it? grin.

God's Grace.

Corry -

This story about the blood drive is hilarious! Sounds exactly like some of the stories Tom is always telling me and that I still believe, even after having known him now for about 27 years!

I wish I could give blood, but no one wants mine with all the health problems I have. But it's a most admirable thing to do and many I know do it. I know I'm most grateful to whoever gave the 4 pints of blood I received when I had my emergency open heart surgery and 5 bypasses. Most grateful.
