Stroke Prevention Part 1

The statistics of suffering a stroke are rather scary, but there are several measures you can take to minimize the risks. Some are rather easy, but others may take a little more effort. It sure is worth it though.

- Keep your blood pressure below or around 120/80, because high blood pressure is a potential risk for a stroke. Have it checked and monitored regularly, preferably by your doctor who will prescribe medication to lower it. The same goes for bad cholesterol levels: have them checked on a regular basis and treated if necessary.

- Avoid developing blood clots and ask your doctor if you should start an aspirin regime. This usually consists of taking one 81 milligram dose daily.

- Ensure your doctor knows all of your medical conditions and that they are treated accordingly. Some illnesses like diabetes, vascular disease, or even atrial fibrillation (abnormal rhythm) can lead to a stroke.

- Some medications can increase the risk of a stroke and if you are not sure whether you are taking any of these, or not, ask and discuss it with your physician; there may be alternative medications you can take which do not increase the chance of a stroke.

- Eat healthy meals by incorporating whole grains, vegetables, fruit, fish, poultry and other lean meats, low or fat-free diary products in your diet. It is best to stay away from sodium and too much fat as much as possible; this will keep your cholesterol and blood pressure at the desired levels.

All of the above are some good guidelines for healthy living. They don't require much effort, but can make all the difference. It doesn't require much effort either to become aware, be mindful of and thankful for all the blessings God gives us.

How easy do we tend to overlook those!

1 Corinthians 10:31
Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

Audrey,
Yup and not just for preventing a stroke, but for the overall health.
It is not easy though. :-)

God's Grace.
