Dutch Sayings

Every language has their own sayings and they are frequently used in speech. I sometimes literally translate Dutch sayings in English, which is hilarious at times and doesn't seem to make any sense, haha.

So I will open a little book (give info on something or someone, usually in a negative way) before my heart sinks into my shoes (loose courage) even though much of it doesn't touch side nor shore (makes no sense) and it may make you feel like you got between shore and ship ( being worse of then before).
The monkey comes out the sleeve (the truth comes out) when I say I am not wearing a high hat about this ( don't have a high opinion on something or someone) and I will try not to walk next to my shoes (be proud of something I accomplished) about something that hits like a wrench on a pig ( totally unrelated and useless).
I would appreciate it if you stuck a heart under my belt (encourage someone) while I try to sell you this for an apple and an egg ( really cheap) but better half an egg then an empty shell ( better to have something then nothing).
And if you think I won't take the cow by the horns ( tackle the problem), then I will let you smell a fart ( show you by actions, pardon my Dutch, hehe). I might spin a wheel in front of your eyes (deceive you) and may try to sell you lemons for apples (deceive and cheat) and say I know of the prince no evil ( pretend to be ignorant) but I will get a cookie of my own dough (reap what I sow).
Even though you may not get caught in front of one hole ( be without options) and won't walk into seven ditches at the same time (get in trouble) you still might buy a cat in the bag ( a mis-purchase). And I will pretend my nose is bleeding (play innocent) and you will be left with the fried pears (stuck with the mess).
By the time I lift my heals (make a quick exit), you will know there is a smell to it ( something ain't right) and you may have ended up from the rain in the drip (worse situation then before) and you will be so mad that the dogs won't like any bread of it ( something very disgusting), but I will have departed with the northern sun ( disappear without a trace). You will try to make the bottom stone come up (do anything and everything) to peel an apple with me (confront me with something) but I will be sitting quietly in a corner (not drawing attention) and look the cat out the tree ( wait and see what's going to happen) and play the insulted innocence (pretend to be ignorant and being blamed unfairly).
But I will come on the coffee ( get what I deserve) for God hears me mutter (knows the intent of my heart) and will put a stick in front of it (prevent or put an end to it).

Even though I like all these sayings, according to my opinion, the best sayings and proverbs are still found in the Bible:-)

Proverbs 4:10
Hear, my son, and receive my sayings, And the years of your life will be many.

Hahaha, thanks girl. I should have posted them in Dutch but then none of y'all would have understood it (grin) unless I had taught y'all Dutch first. There is a thought! Lesson no.1: Heel hartelijk bedankt voor je lieve commentaar:-)

Ok, translation: A heartfelt thank you for your sweet comment:-)

Audrey:

I am so glad you are starting to feel better, may God bless you with a quick recovery!

They are and I tried to find the origin behind them but that's not an easy task. It's fun to find out though how many sayings are the same in English. It surprised me:-)
Ok, ok I'll say it out loud: I love languages, hehe.

God's Grace.

Just kidding, hehe.

Interested in Dutch culture and language??? I can "open a little book there", haha.

I had to make myself stop for I could have gone on and on but then the post would have been way too long. Maybe I will do another one sometime with all the other sayings bouncing around in my head.

God's Grace.

Here the saying goes: taking the bull by the horns. In Dutch it's the cow. Both are very similar.

Kc and I have a suspicion since the Dutch were part of the founding fathers of the states, they had their influence on the american language for there are many sayings either very similar or exactly alike.

But...whether we take the cow or the bull by the horns, we have to "stick our arms out of our sleeves" (get to work) and "wash this little pig" (get it done, solved) and may God bless:-)

Audrey:

Girlie, you are always in such a good mood and high spirits, it's a joy and very encouraging!:-)

Good morning in Dutch is : Goede morgen.

Soooo, Goede morgen dear sister!!!! Beat you to it in Dutch, haha.

God's Grace.

Thanks so much for writing this, I needed the joy.

I don't think I will learn them in Dutch. I am teaching at a school that has a bilingual program. I gotta learn some Spanish first. I think I better learn to count and know my colors in Spanish.
