Our Daily Bread

I got a slice of bread, spread some butter on it and topped it off with a slice of cheese.
Kc: " What are you doing?"
Me: " Making a sandwich for lunch."
Kc, laughing: " That is no sandwich!"
Me, slightly confused: " Yes it is."
Kc: " Nooo. A sandwich is two slices of bread with lunch-meat and cheese in between and it's often toasted as well."
Me: " Ehh... both cheese and lunch-meat??? In the Netherlands we only use one slice of bread and one "topping". That is a sandwich."
Kc: " Do you eat peanutbutter & jelly sandwiches in the Netherlands?"
Me: " No! You eat either peanutbutter OR jelly on your sandwich. Not both."
Kc: " You need to have a PB & J-sandwich!"
I came to like a PB & J-sandwich and hardly eat a "Dutch" sandwich for lunch anymore. :-)

Both were geared towards the same goal and both would get the job done. The way of doing it was different. In this case there was no right or wrong, no good or bad. Just a raising of eye-brows over each others way of doing it.

It's often the habit we were taught, or adopted ourselves, on how to do it. Sometimes it makes no difference, sometimes it makes a world of difference. A willingness and commitment for self-examination, self-judgment, consideration and change, might result in an "eye-opener" that there is a better way. It could mean the difference between Life and death. :-)

Romans 8:6
For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

Jay & I had PB&Js for lunch today. I make him half a sandwich at a time (one slice of bread folded over), and today he ate three! He loves his pb&js!

At this late stage of my life, Tom had to teach ME the "correct" way to make a PB & J sandwich. ha!

I'd always put the peanut butter on a piece of bread, then the jelly and then put the other piece of bread on top of it, cut it in half, and it was ready.

According to "Mr." Andrews, the "proper" way is to put the peanut butter on one piece of bread, the jelly on the other, in an even coat (our current favorite is Smuckers Rasberry Preserves WITH seeds), and THEN put them together and cut it in half, either horizontally or in triangles.

They taste MUCH better that way of course, Corry! ha! (I mean, what can I say about husbands and always being right?!) Dee

Lenise,
Three? Wow, that little fellow has got some apetite! I can just imagine that little cute face covered with pb&j! :-)

Jayne,
Nope, it was one of those "American singles" slices of cheese. I don't think it had double the calcium, haha. The only Dutch cheese I have seen here, so far, is Gouda. That doesn't even touch the tip of the iceberg concerning "fancy" Dutch cheeses. grin.

Dee,
Well, I have to agree with Tom. It does taste much better that way! hehe.
But the way Kc makes a pb&j sandwich is just out of this world. Kc used to mix the pb&j in a small bowl and then spread it on the sandwich. Too much trouble for me, so I do it the way Tom does but it never tastes as good as Kc's :-)

God's Grace.

Jay was remarkably neat afterwards. I've finally taught him about biting into a sandwich instead of diassembling it. And you know I didn't put a whole lot of gloppy jelly on it!

Lenise,
Jay is a bright little toddler!
You are wise not to put too much jelly on it. I prolly do and that's asking for disaster, haha.
It comes out on all sides when I bite into it.
God's Grace.

My hope and prayer is to be more spiritually-minded; I know the perils and calamity of agonizing over circumstances, and all bitterness needs to be uprooted and replaced with the joy of our salvation.

Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God. I'm going to go nurture my faith in the Word.

Give us this day our daily bread!

Ryan,
Very wise words! :-)

Many times I find myself agonizing over "earthly" things and circumstances, self-induces or not, and totally overlook God's many blessings and... my part! Having faith and living according to His Word makes all the difference. All will work out for the best than.

Having joy in our salvation and counting our blessings is actually very simple, but not always easy. Even in that we have to trust God to provide. And He will :-)

God's Grace.

Claire,
It certainly would, but the big question here is: who decides to make it a double or one slice sandwich?! grin.
I make my own "sub"-sandwiches and I don't think they have that much calories. At least I hope not, haha.
God bless you and your mom! I hope she is doing better each day.

Audrey,
Bread is eaten for breakfast and lunch in the Netherlands. That is prolly also why there are so many different cheeses, lunch-meats, jellies/preserves and other (sweet) kinds of bread-spreads to choose from. I think I will do a post on that sometime, hehe.
Oh I love rice! White rice with a little butter and some sugar...Yummy! Fattening, I know haha. Don't read this Claire! grin.
Love ya, lieve zus!

God's Grace.
